Tier 4 - Student Visa

The UK Tier 4 visa, also known as a UK student visa is available to students wishing to come to the UK and study. The college or university that you choose to study at must be a registered sponsor under Tier 4. To qualify for the UK student visa, you must be issued with a Certificate of Application or a visa letter from the college or university, and must have adequate money for tuition and maintenance.

To qualify for a UK student visa you must also fulfil certain criteria, including:

• You must have a secured place at a UK-based college or university for full-time study. Full-time is defined as a minimum of 15 hours of classroom study per week;
• You must be able to support yourself financially without access to public funds (benefits), as well as be able to pay for the course, all accommodation and maintenance.

If you are successful in applying for a UK student visa you will be granted a Tier 4 visa, depending on the length of the course you are studying. You may work whilst on a UK student visa for up to 20 hours per week during term time depending on the length of your visa. If you have a partner or dependant, they are usually free to work as they choose as long as you are going to be studying for more than one year.

If you wish to study for six months or less, you may qualify for a student visitor visa, but you might still require entry clearance for this. A student visitor visa does not allow you to work in the UK.
