Tier 4 deadline imminent

Schools, universities and colleges who want to educate foreign students, and are yet to submit their application for a sponsorship license under Tier 4, need to get their skates on. Applications must be submitted to the UK Border Agency (UKBA) by close of business today in order to be processed in time for launch of Tier 4 of the new Points Based System (PBS) at the end of March.

Tier 2 goes live despite concerns over ill-prepared employers

The launch of Tiers 2 and 5 of the new points based system has been a hot topic over 2008 and was recently opposed by the Tories as it was thought many employers were not sufficiently prepared. However, last night the UK Government voted in favour of these changes, meaning the launch went ahead as planned yesterday.

ID cards and nincompoops

This week, the BBC reported the UK Government’s controversial ID card scheme is now live. The first people to receive the cards will be non-EU students and husbands, wives or partners of permanent residents who apply to extend their stay. Officials say these two categories are those who are most likely of abusing immigration rules. The cards will include the individual's name and picture, their nationality, immigration status and two fingerprints.

The real impact of imposing hefty fines for employing illegal workers

In February 2008, UK immigration regulations began enforcing a new regime of fines on employers found to be employing migrants without official permission to work. UK Border Agency officials may now issue on-the-spot fines to employers of up to £10,000 per unauthorised worker – a measure which has been accompanied by a series of highly publicised immigration raids on workplaces. The new regime has led to a huge increase in demands on the part of employers for passports and other identity documents from their workers.

Organisations must train UK staff before bringing in migrant workers

Personneltoday.com has reported that a government adviser who helped create the new points-based system has advised employers they won't be able to bring in non-EU migrant workers unless they also demonstrate their efforts to train UK workers.

Tier 2 & 5 will go live on 27 November 2008

The UK’s Border and Immigration Agency recently announced that the next step in their immigration overhaul is due to be implemented on the 27th November 2008. What this will mean is that the long awaited Tier 2 – the points based system’s ‘flag ship’ Tier – and the Tier 5 schemes will come into operation on this date.

HSMP faces second judicial review

Personneltoday.com has reported that campaigners have officially filed for a second judicial review against the Government's handling of changes to the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP). They claim that the Government has not done enough to adhere to the terms of a judgement made by the High Court in April 2008.
