Changes to 'knowledge of language and life' requirement
20th April, 2010
On the 7th of April the UKBA introduced some key changes to the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provisions, within the 'knowledge of language and life' requirement, for individuals wishing to settle in the UK.
From the 7th onwards most applicants aged 18-64 will be expected to demonstrate that they have a sufficient knowledge of the English language, this can be confirmed by passing the 'life in the UK' test or through obtaining an approved ESOL qualification.
Through the ESOL route individuals must have studied their ESOL qualification at an accredited college, and able to demonstrate progression to at least one level, in order obtain their qualification.
An Accredited college defined:
- Publically funded college inspected by Ofsted or its equivalent
- A private college accredited by Accreditation UK, the British Accreditation Council (BAC), the Accreditation Body for Language Services (ABLS) or the Accreditation Service for International Colleges (ASIC).
Settlement applications submitted after the 7th April 2010 will adhere to the new ESOL provisions. There are no changes to those taking the 'life in the UK' test.
